Montenegrin cuisine Updated: December 21, 22

Montenegrin cuisine has benefited from centuries of connections and trade with neighboring countries, resulting in very delicious dishes indeed. Therefore it is a fusion of Mediterranean and Eastern Europe cuisine, because of the centuries being under the rule of the Ottoman empire. Besides the natural beauty of the country, and remarkable landscapes, traditional Montenegrin cuisine attracts a lot of visitors and makes them come again.

Even though Montenegro is a small country, there are obvious differences between its parts in terms of gastronomy. The coastal part is known for its seafood, which is some of the best in the world. There is a wide variety of seafood, including crayfish, shrimp, mussels, and clams. There's also a great variety of vegetables and fruits, including grapes, figs, peaches, and apples. Olive oil is also a famous product of the country.

Meat and cheese are more consumed in the interior and northern parts of Montenegro.

In the municipality of Cetinje, the village Njeguši is a very important place on the gastronomic map of the country. The most famous Montenegrin specialties prosciutto and cheese are created there. In northern parts, “kačamak” is also a traditional dish made of potatoes, flour, a lot of cream (kajmak) and cheese.
